Marquee hire guide – factors to consider

Marquees are used in a huge number of applications, 12 months of the year, for weddings, parties, storage, building replacement, sporting  events and much more.

They come in a range of styles and can vary in size, from a small garden canopy to a structure that can hold 1000s of people. Most hire companies will be able to offer a number of accessories to turn the marquee from a tent into a fantastic venue.

If you are considering using a marquee for your event, there are a number of questions you should ask yourself. Some of these questions and some basic information can be seen below:

Q. How Many people do you want to attend your event?

A. After working out how many people you want to attend your event, you can decide on the size of your structure. The Marquee Hire company will be able to advise you on this. The size of the structure you need will also depend on the way you want to lay the marquee out. Many people want a dance floor and formal sitting for their event and this will obviously take up more space than if your guests are standing.

There is a size guide available on Marquee Hire Guide to help you decide the size of marquee that you may require.

Q. What kind of marquees are available?

A. The two main types of marquee are the Traditional (with guy ropes and stakes holding it in place) and the Frame Marquee. The Traditional Marquee needs a little bit more space to erect, due to the guy ropes that protrude from its sides. These days there are also a number of more specialist tents available as well, including, amongst others, Yurts, Tipis and Beadouin Tents.

Q. Will you need heating?

A. If you are planning to use the marquee in the winter (or even in the unpredictable British summer) you may want to consider whether the marquee will need heating. If the event will be going on into the evening, it may well become chilly as the night wears on. Blower heaters are often considered the most effective form of heating. You can ask your marquee hirer about this.

Other questions you may want to ask include:

Q. How much deposit do you need to pay?

Q. What insurance does the marquee hire company hold?

Q. Can you see references from the Marquee Hire company?

Before agreeing to hire a marquee, you should confirm in writing what it is you are getting for your money. This document should include details of any VAT that is payable, as well as things like travel expenses.
